Summer seems to be stretching on forever this year, but if you’re thinking about a short break in the UK over Christmas and New Year it pays to be organised. Here’s a few ideas for hotel and B&B breaks, plus some self catering ideas from the Further Afield collection:

Carradales – Argyll, Scotland
Maurice and Steve are offering great Christmas packages at their lovely guest house. Three nights, plus great food, drink and comfy beds. £975 per room for three nights including the Christmas cheer!
Artist Residence Oxfordshire
Head to the countryside outside of Oxford and hole up in this stunning thatched pub with restaurant and super, eclectically styled rooms. Check out the Shepherd’s Hut for a romantic bolthole – in the grounds but with access to all things Artist Residence. Beautiful.
St Valery – Alnmouth
The perfect reboot after Christmas and before seeing in 2019 could be a couple of nights with Harvey at this chilled out and stylish B&B. Walks along the beach, great pub food and you can take your canine friend too! A perfect Christmas present to yourself.
Whitrigg House – Cumbria
Imagine walking the stunning fells as you escape the trappings of a full-on Christmas at home, returning tired but happy to lovely Whitrigg House. Relax and be restored in this great B&B and be looked after by Robbie and Mike. Magical.

The Pink Tower – Nr Salisbury, Wiltshire
A unique and quirky hideout for two on a working farm – perfect to see in 2019. Its inside down layout means light and views from your living room whilst being ticked away downstairs when you head down the stairs to “Bedfordshire”. A walker’s dream too.
Flint Cottage – Nr Blandford Forum, Dorset
A perfect escape for a couple’s Christmas getaway, Flint Cottage is part of the beautiful Launceston Farm. Wood burner. Outdoor bath. Fully decked out for the festive season. Eat in or walk to the local pub… Availability in December and across Christmas itself.
The Granary – Suffolk
Head to the heavily beamed Granary Barn for five nights and experience rural Suffolk at its best. With rolling fields and stunning coastline, this is a walker’s paradise. The house is cozy and traditional without being “old granny-ish” and makes a perfect festive home away from home.
Hollyhock Cottage – Cornwall
With the option of arriving to a cottage decked out ready for Christmas, with food provided by the on-site kitchen if required, this could be the most stress-free Christmas ever… The setting’s stunning, surrounded by beautiful countryside and an area ripe for exploring. Hollyhock is currently available over Christmas and New Year.
Cartshed Cottages – Norfolk
The cottages in the converted outhouses of this manor house are stylish and comfortable whilst retaining their character and charm. We love the simple palette used throughout as well as heading out to explore this fascinating part of the world. Availability’s limited, but with five cottages it’s worth a try.
Family & Friends: LargeR Houses to Rent for Christmas or New Year
Old Barn Tregonetha – Cornwall (sleeps 5)
This multi award-winning barn conversion is a stunning setting to see in the new year. With its AGA, wood burning stove and grand piano it almost feels like you’ve stepped back in time. Luckily the mod cons and eco-friendly credentials remind you that this is very much a 21st-century bolthole. Stephen will arrange your shopping to be done for you too. If only the whole of 2019 could be this lovely.
Moo House – Newton-by-the-Sea, Northumberland (12)
REDUCED RATE AVAILABLE: Perfect for larger groups, especially if you’ve got young ones with you as there’s a separate games barn for their amusement. The house has plenty of space and you can spread out and enjoy living spaces (check out the massive sofa) and there are enough bathrooms to avoid queues. A really fun, group house for Christmas or New Year.
Wellhayes Barn – Lyme regis, Dorset (sleeps up to 6)
Down a private track in wooded Dorset countryside you find yourself next to a lake where time stands still. Stay in Wellhayes Barn and you’ve a perfect group Christmas or New Year venue, but also a place in which to fully relax and restore. Views across the water are stunning as are nights in front of the wood burning stove. Check out The Store at Wellhayes next door – perfect for two – which is still available for Christmas.
Trelugas Cottage – Cornwall (sleeps 5)
New Year is special at Treworgey, the farm of which Trelugas is part. With lights twinkling in the outdoor trees, festive treats awaiting on the tea tray, real Christmas trees in every cottage (if wanted) and the option to order home-made food from an on-site kitchen to be delivered to your cottage. The nearest town, the seaside town of Looe, is a fantastic place to spend New Year’s Eve. The boats and harbour are lit up, restaurants pick fancy dress themes, and celebrations end with fantastic fireworks over the beach. Fun!
