ECO BARN RETREAT
In the midst of stunning Cornish countryside, this converted stone barn has all the trappings of a country cottage – beautiful gardens, stone walls, a wood burner in the huge sitting room, there’s even an AGA – but coupled with every mod con and impressive eco-friendly credentials, including electric vehicle charging; a true marriage of ancient and modern.

The Location
The Old Barn is in the tiny hamlet of Tregonetha, with open Cornish countryside everywhere you look. But its location is also smack in the middle of Cornwall with masses easily explored; Padstow one way and Fowey and beautiful Mevagissey the other, are both around 30 minutes by car. The towns of Wadebridge and Newquay nearby. St Ives is only 45 minutes. THE EDEN PROJECT and the LOST GARDENS OF HELIGAN for gardeners are a must see. For us though, it’s the amazing walks throughout the area that make The Old Barn such a great retreat.
Train and air connections are nearby, but a car makes for the best way to make the most of your stay.
- Stephen’s recent renovation has opened up the whole of the barn, with vaulted ceilings, natural wood and masses of light; all creating a calm and elegant retreat
- the living room is a huge affair, with wood burner and French windows onto a balcony overlooking the surrounding gardens and countryside. There’s also a regularly tuned quality boudoir grand piano for use with prior agreement
- the ‘welcome pack’ on arrival is exceptional; there’s the usual milk, eggs and bread, but also homemade cakes and Cornish cream teas.
- heading down to the coast from The Old Barn is incredibly easy, but just as nice is escaping the crowds at the end of the day on the beach to return home
- there are a huge number of amazing places to eat in the area; from country pubs to big name restaurants. Stephen is happy to offer up his indepth local knowledge when called upon
- two double (one with en-suite) and one single bedroom; one of the doubles and single plus a lovely second bathroom are on the ground floor
- both bathrooms are beautifully fitted, one with a slipper bath
- huge sitting room with vaulted ceilings – there’s also superfast broadband Wifi and a Loewe Smart TV with Blue Ray DVD/CD Player and sound bar Hi-Fi! There’s a second small living room off the second double bedroom
- the superbly fitted kitchen has an AGA along with traditional oven and pretty much everything else you’d need, including coffee machine. Stephen provides far more than the average you expect
- the south facing enclosed gardens are lovely and there’s plenty of space for eating and relaxing outside. There’s also a gas BBQ for sunnier days
- dedicated chargers for Electric vehicles
- the barn is very dog friendly – to the point that Stephen won’t charge Further Afield travellers to take Fido (normally £25)
Stephen has owned The Old Barn for over 25 years and has renovated it twice; the first time from a derelict barn and then over 20 years later to create the beautiful building it is today. The most recent renovation allowed Stephen free reign to indulge his love of all things eco and to create an as sustainable as possible house – his research earning him a place at university for an MSc course.

The Old Barn is a beautiful place, each bedroom has it\'s own quirk, and the bathrooms are equally matched. Stephen is a very attentive host and clearly cares greatly about his guests having a wonderful time. We would thoroughly recommend and visit again!
