Newly renovated Portugese farmhouse with private pool, surrounded by acres of wooded grounds in the heart of Portuguese countryside. Lazy days on the terrace or by the pool or head out and explore historic towns and villages.

The Location

The medieval hilltop town of Monsaraz can be seen from the house and is a short drive away, but it can also be reached on foot. There you can wander the streets taking in spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and nearby Alqueva lake where there is a river beach. You can book cruises around the lake which is a delightful way of passing an evening.

There are several restaurants, bars and interesting shops inside the walled town and your hosts have recommendations they’re happy to share.

For day trips you could consider Évora – the capital of the Alentejo region with an historical centre classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. You can also choose to head across the Spanish border and sample the delights of the neighbours.

Lisbon and its airport is about two hours away.

Richard and Alex have owned Monte de Santa Maria since July 2022. They have been coming to this region since 2001 where they stayed very close to this property. Since then, they have come back many times, fell in love with the area and ended up buying the Monte. Alex grew up in northern Portugal and Richard in England. They both live in London but try to spend as much time as possible in Monsaraz, either on holidays or working from home
