Gorgeous French Retreats
France. Goodness we love it. It’s such a diverse and beautiful country, full of incredible scenery, characterful towns and cities, superb food and wine and some of the most gorgeous places to stay. From luxe châteaux to characterful cottages and farmhouses Further Afield has curated some highly individual and always welcoming places to stay across France and here is just a highlight.
The House in Aups, Provence
One of the reasons we love Aups is that whilst it has everything a village in Provence should have – narrow cobbled streets, stone houses with colourful shutters a bakery serving freshly baked delights, vibrant markets – it’s also not on the tourist map ito the same extent as some nearby villages. This charming converted mill house is in the oldest part of the town and has a walled garden with pool – ideal for summer evenings. Sleeping six this much loved house makes for the perfect French escape.
The Old Presbytery, Dordogne
David and Wayne have created an incredibly friendly and beautiful guest house close to historic Sainte-Foy-la-Grande with its fabulous weekly market – touted as one of the regions biggest and best farmers markets. The guest house has five bedrooms and an apartment for four all with access to a crystal clear salt water pool surrounded by rolling gardens and open views to countryside beyond. Visit quality local wineries and restaurants before heading home for a workout in the gym followed by a sauna, or make use of the fun games room, or simply enjoy the poolside peace and tranquility.
La Petite Maison, The Loire
This little gem of a riverside cottage for two is really rather lovely. There’s an open plan living space with a wood burner and access to a veranda perfect for warmer days outside. There’s a small town on the doorstep with all the essentials and others close by with options for eating out. This is an area for exploring (and sampling) French wineries and Sue and Micaela can arrange bikes for during your stay too. Your hosts also own another gite (La Maison du Passeur) as well as the guest house La Grande Maison.
La Vie de Cocagne, Normandy
We love this beamed French farmhouse stuffed full of character and French style! You’re surrounded by tranquil countryside and there’s a hot tub to round off the relaxation. Cook up local dishes in the well-equipped kitchen or jump in the car to Honfleur, Trouville and Deauville and sample some of the best French cuisine available.
La Thérèsienne, Normandy
New to Further Afield is this stylish and intimate guest house. With just three bedrooms it offers the chance to retreat and be looked after by charming hosts Steven and Cristoph. Rooms are all spacious and full of original features and the communal spaces designed to make you feel relaxed and at home. The house is in a beautiful valley on the banks of the River Vire offering a truly serene location but it’s also close to Mont Saint-Michel and perfect for exploring locations infamous from WW2 landings.
Le Domaine de Monteils, Languedoc
The whole vibe here is based on couple’s escapes. Time to retreat and spend time together in beautiful surroundings where you’re encouraged to switch off and simply “be” in the moment. The decor is unique and stylish and we’re particular fans of Villa Oceane which feels like a Thai villa but without the long haul flight… one that has incredible French restaurants and some of the world’s best vineyards to explore nearby.

Clos 1906, Bordeaux
Saint Emilion is one of those towns that simply stays with you. Its Medieval cobbled alleyways, the fabulous restaurants, cafes and bars, the mind boggling amount of wine on offer… the list goes on. But high on the list should also be a stay at this utterly fabulous boutique French guest house. Your hosts offer a concierge service to ensure you get the best from your stay, happily booking up everything from personal wine tours to hot air balloon rides.
