The Location
In the lovely village of Portinscale – with fabulous cafes and a good local pub – The Mount B&B is also only 15 minutes walk from Keswick and within easy reach of the Lake District’s highlights.
Keswick is a bustling market town and if you love the great outdoors, it has it all. Incredible walking routes criss cross the area and there are mountains such as Catbells, Skiddaw and Blencathra closeby and Derwent Water easily reached for paddleboarding, kayaking and wild swiming
Easy days out from The Mount B&B include Buttermere, Grasmere and Ambleside and Aira Force waterfall amongst a myriad of other wonderful options – your hosts here are happy to whittle this down to help find the perfect day for you.
Easily reached by road – and a car does help when exploring this region – you can also get the train to Penrith and take a 20 minute taxi ride. There is also a good bus service to take you to the best places nearby too.
- The welcoming vibe of the house itself. The Mount has been welcoming travellers to the Lake District for over 100 years! People have always chosen this gorgeous house and idyllic village as a great place to stay, and many of them return year after year.
- There are so many brilliant walks straight from the front door. Challenging or gentle mountainy and lakeside walks or simply pop over to Keswick for a good pub lunch
- The Keswick area has great eating options. From pubs to Michelin starred fine dining you have it all and many of those are dog-friendly too
- Caroline and Clive and their family are super-welcoming and knowledgeable hosts who help take The Mount to the next level of Great British B&B
- The rooms are all well designed, with some fab art and laid out to make the most of the spaces and views they have.
- We also love the Shepherd’s Hut – which The Observer chose as one of the Top 10 places to stay when you’re travelling solo
- Five ensuite rooms across the first and second floors of the main house – some of which are dog-friendly
- A ridiculously cute Shepherd’s Hut for one in the garden with it’s own loo, heating and fridge (with sole access to its own shower room in the main house)
- The rooms in the house all have lovely views across countryside and some to Derwent Water and have access to a fridge with fresh milk to compliment the tea and coffee in the room
- Breakfasts are at the communal table in the dining room or in the garden in better weather
- There’s also a beautifully decorated living room for chilling and chatting
- Parking at this dog-friendly Lake District is super easy as Caroline and Clive have private spaces behind the house
Caroline and Clive left hectic lives in the South of England to live in the lakes and bring their children up enjoying all the lakes that have to offer – walks up mountains, swimming in the lakes, cycling, great foody places, good theatre. It’s been the best thing they ever did, and they love sharing their experiences with their guests.
