Meet the owners – The Elm Tree

Enjoy an autumnal getaway at The Elm Tree in this beautiful corner of Lincolnshire with afternoon teas, stunning coastline and medieval market towns to explore. Check out their seasonal offer for Further Afield travellers too.

Tucked away in this beautiful corner of Lincolnshire, The Elm Tree is a proper piece of English escapism. Lovely rooms, afternoon teas, Medieval market town to explore down the road plus a ruined castle and stunning coastline. Lovely. Particular joy can be had wandering around ancient and beautifully preserved Horncastle.

Meet your charming and effervescent hosts Jonathan and Chris.

FA: Were you always country boys or did you have to make a leap from city life?

Both of us are country born and bred – Chris being a butcher’s son and me a farmer’s son so both of us have strong links with the country! I did the city life but always hankered for the quiet and peacefulness of the country life.

FA: How did you end up running your business?

I was previously a special needs teacher when I met Chris who has always worked in catering. We set up a coffee shop together from scratch, which ended up best in Lincolnshire! Chris found the virtually derelict house on the internet as a repossession property and convinced me that it had “potential”….this was in 2014 and after an incredible amount of work and moving in with the builders we opened in March 2016.

FA: Tell us a bit about the country pursuits that are on offer either through you or through providers in the immediate area that you work with.

When setting up The Elm Tree we did it on the basis of country pursuits  – with the Lincolnshire Wolds providing fantastic shooting and fishing opportunities.  The wolds themselves are an area of outstanding natural beauty, with a variety of different walks and wildlife to be seen.

FA: What’s your favorite walk and are you a dog friendly place to stay?

Having two pugs ourselves we wanted to ensure that we were a fully pet friendly business – dog friendly and adult only! We often take a walk down the quiet beach of Anderby Creek –  a short drive away. It’s an undiscovered part of the coastline and often you don’t see anyone and can walk for miles! Well if the pugs would walk that far!

FA: Do you have a favorite pub or restaurant nearby?

There is a pub walkable in the village that is great and again is dog friendly! We have a wide range of restaurants we like, our favorite being Witham and Blues an American themed diner run by friends of ours – camp and fantastic fun!

FA: If you’re looking for a bit of culture where do you head to?

Lincoln is steeped with culture having the best cathedral in the recent Cathedral world cup. The Bailgate area is full of independent shops, bars and coffee shops – perfect to while away the hours.

FA: What’s the best thing about running your business?

We are our own boss –  yes it can be busy at times and we invariably don’t know what day it is – but that is all part of the fun! Plus we get to work together and from home – a winning combination!

A seasonal discount is also available throughout October and November with 50% off your second night’s stay, as well as a complimentary bottle of wine if you mention Further Afield.
