A beautifully renovated 18th-century tinsmith’s workshop, this gorgeous B&B is one-of-a-kind. Styled with a superb collection of art and design pieces, it’s more than a pretty face. With sublime home-cooked breakfasts, charming owners and friendly dogs, it has a big heart too.
The Location
The perfect spot for exploring North Norfolk, the property is well placed for cherry-picking the best that the county has to offer. Aylsham is a lovely town set in stunning countryside with coastal villages and glorious beaches of the North Norfolk coast nearby. The Broads, Holkham, Blakeney, Cley, Cromer and Wells (approximately 45mins away) come specifically recommended. There are plentiful country houses in the area too, including Blickling Hall and Felbrigg Hall, owned by the National Trust.
To offset the eating you’re likely to do considering the gastronomic excellence in the area, there are numerous energetic pursuits to engage in, if you feel inclined. After your Full English, you can walk and cycle into the countryside from Tinsmith’s House as fast as your legs will carry you, sail on the Broads, or zip off to the beach to swim or build sandcastles.
To get to Aylsham from London, it’s a 2hr 30minute drive via the M11.
- The property itself. Originally an industrial workshop, it’s clad with wooden panels and is both unique and historically intriguing. Everything inside the house is delightful too – the owners have a wonderful eye for interesting, beautiful art and objects
- The breakfasts. Locally sourced bacon and sausages, plump mushrooms and tomatoes and perfectly cooked eggs, or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Fruit, pastries, coffee, cereals, freshly-squeezed juice
- Paul and Paul are such a welcoming couple who make you feel instantly at ease. They genuinely want their guests to enjoy their stay and are full of local information about the best places to eat and visit
- The dogs, Dusty and Cleo. Though they’re not allowed in the guest rooms, the dogs are friendly and gentle and a fun element of the house
- Ground floor open plan living room and kitchen, with a separate dining room that opens onto a garden
- Two bedrooms on the first floor are both doubles, the Elephant Room and the Blofields Room, furnished with antique and contemporary furniture
- The Elephant Room is light and airy, with views of the town’s rooftops and large windows. It has its own en-suite shower room
- The Blofields Room has a double aspect with views toward the town’s centre as well as over the garden and includes a super king-size bed, TV and DVD and has exclusive access to a luxurious bathroom
- Home-cooked breakfasts are made with the freshest, local ingredients
- Bottled mineral water, tea and coffee making facilities are provided
- The owners have two dogs, so unfortunately no pets can be welcomed
Paul Vater and Paul Barratt have had successful careers working in the arts and design field and moved to North Norfolk from London in 2012. At Tinsmith’s House, they have a small design studio and a wonderful collection of art and design objects that are displayed around the house, illustrating their brilliant and unique style and taste.
