Fabulous Oxfordshire pub with rooms

With good reason The Kingham Plough appears in Conde Nast Traveller’s list of favourite restaurants and hotels in The Cotswolds. This beautiful piece of ‘Englishness’ has six stunning rooms to choose from as a base as you explore this area of outstanding beauty, or simply wander downstairs for a pint and a feast. Heaven.

The Location

The Kingham Plough is in the heart of the village of Kingham, one of those beautiful villages that you can’t quite believe exist outside of the set of a period drama, with its honey coloured stone cottages, thatched roofs and village greens. It’s just outside of Chipping Norton with its market and antique shops and equally lovely Stow on the Wold is nearby plus the whole of the Cotswolds is right there on the doorstep to explore.

There’s a train station in Kingham making it an ideal weekend escape from London (1hr 20 from Paddington) or one of the connecting cities and is accessible from the M5 and M40.

  • The chance to dine downstairs on the likes of a ‘Salt Pig’ Charcuterie Board followed by Sweet Pea & Mint Tortellini before staggering upstairs to bed – check out The Kingham Plough’s menu
  • The rooms have a beautiful cottage style to them with soft pastel colours and they’re all spacious and light
  • Bathrooms can make or break a place to stay and these certainly make it with lovely showers and Bramley toiletries
  • You could aim to stay here if you’re heading to the Big Festival at Alex James’ farm down the road
  • The ease of getting to Kingham by road or rail is a real draw
  • The breakfast here gets a mention in pretty much every review and is varied, fresh and plentiful
  • This is a perfect base for a few days on foot exploring the pathways that criss cross the Cotswolds – and offers a pint in the beer garden as a way of reviving yourself
  • Six ensuite bedrooms, four in the main pub and two annex rooms which are dog friendly rooms
  • Each room is traditionally decorated with a country style to match this beautiful building
  • Room 4 can accommodate an extra Zbed guest
  • Complimentary Neal’s Yard toiletries
  • Digital radio with iPhone and iPod docking station and 32″ Flat screen ‘Smart’ television with DVD, Freeview and iPlayer
  • Tea and coffee in the rooms, plus homemade biscuits and fresh milk
  • Pub with bar, restaurant and private dining room. It’s always worth booking for dinner if you’re staying as The Kigham Plough gets busy, especially at weekends

Matt and Katie took over the Kingham Plough from chef patron and Great British Menu winner, Emily Watkins. They’ve worked with some big names in hospitality but they’re also down to earth and friendly and The Kingham Plough reflects that with its warm and inclusive welcome.
