The Location

Originally built in 1913, The Idle Rocks has long been a part of the community of St Mawes. Built on the site of the old bakery and popular as a luxury coastal hotel in the 1930s, it is now completely refurbished. From castles to gardens, wild walks and glorious beaches, the hotel is well placed for time out by the sea.

Driving is easy, but if you fancy the train St Austell station is 35 minutes’ away and a pick up can easily be arranged. Newquay airport is 40 minutes’ away.  Helicopter landings can be arranged nearby.

  • Idle Sundays at Idle Rocks treat – they are all about sipping Idle Mary cocktails, tucking into Eggs Benedict, Omelette Arnold Bennet, fresh Oysters … all served up in your home away from home without all the work!
  • Visiting the Lost Gardens of Heligan (on everybody’s ‘must see’ list) or heading off for a drive (an hour) to the Tate Modern while you’re a Cornwall local
  • If you want to keep close to home, you can get back to basics and hire a fishing boat, catch a sea bass and hand it over to Head Chef Guy Owen when you return.  It’s pretty satisfying to tuck into your own home-caught fish when you come down to dinner – in a restaurant far from home
  • Energy to burn? You can work it off in a sea kayak or your own grand slam – The Idle Rocks is more than happy to hire you a boat or a kayak if that’s what you fancy
  • There are two lovely beaches just a stroll from the hotel and Porthcurnick (with its HIDDEN HUT BEACH CAFE) is a short drive, or cycle down the coast if you want to explore
  • Fully refurbished and reopened in July 2013, The Idle Rocks is a stunning contemporary hotel with luxury modern facilities
  • Double windowed sea rooms, balconette beach rooms, harbour view rooms, hideaway multi-levelled attic rooms and cosy, bright village rooms – all are sumptuously styled with a fresh contemporary look
  • Two dog friendly rooms so book early if you want to take Fido
  • The hotel’s restaurant celebrates the best of Cornwall, showcasing the full range of produce on the doorstep.  High standards are fuelled by the philosophy of good-old-fashioned hospitality, simplicity and warmth.  The South facing terrace is perfect for a long breakfast or a sunset supper overlooking, and at high tide, touching, the sea

David and Karen Richards bought The Idle Rocks in 2010.  Closing it in October 2012, they completely refurbished it to reopen it as a modern luxury hotel with an emphasis on all things Cornish, from the art on the walls and artifacts dotted about the hotel to the menus which are very focused on the seasons and the abundance of high quality Cornish produce.
