The Barn at Roundhurst

South Downs, Sussex, England

Set around a sheltered courtyard, the rooms of this historical B&B barn complex, have an easy luxury in a stunning setting.  In the 17th century Barn itself, the chef cooks up outstanding breakfasts with ingredients from the adjoining farm.

The Location

Within the South Downs National Park, an hour from London, 1.15 hours to Brighton, half an hour from the coast and with adjoining National Trust land, the Barn at Roundhurst is a great location for a country break.  Whether you want to potter and shop in local villages or get sporty with golf, riding or clay pigeons, there is plenty to do nearby.

Train to Haslemere (50 mins from Waterloo), London. Haslemere is 3 miles away and you can hop in a cab and be there in five minutes.

  • the stunning barn creates an amazing setting and place to enjoy the chef’s amazing breakfast using locally sourced ingredients (most from the farm you are on)
  • being just over an hour from London makes this a perfect place to explore London without having to be in it.  The peace at Roundhurst is total and after a day in the capital you can unwind and recharge. Plus the policy is only children over 12, adding to the general calm
  • Moya is very engaging and charming.  She is the perfect hostess and clearly enjoys whats she does
  • if you admire the artwork, you can take it home; The Barn sells prints of original artwork and even its cosy rugs and throws. And there’s even a glamorous cow hide travel bag on offer
  • whether you fancy a day at Goodwood, a picnic in nearby Cowdray Park or to explore the many gardens and estates of the three surrounding counties, there is more than enough for a great weekend away. If you like your National Trust houses and gardens you will be spoilt for choice
  • The Barn has six stunning bedrooms decorated with a warm, sophisticated style in natural shades and rich textures.  All have super comfortable king sized beds (or twins) with crisp Egyptian cotton and goosedown feather duvets (alternatives duvets on offer if you prefer).
  • the rooms have original artwork, deep armchairs, thick cushions and cosy blankets; as well as WiFi, iPod docks, TV/DVDs and even a corkscrew, wine glasses and to encourage some deeper relaxation – a yoga mat
  • the bathrooms include large separate showers, baths with deep toned granite surrounds, fluffy bathrobes and luxury products that you might expect from a 5 star hotel
  • the Grade II listed Barn is a stunningly restored space housing a comfortable sitting room, dining area, reception and library
  • from taking tea in the gazebo to finding a sunny spot overlooking the farm and National Trust’s Blackdown, the gardens are a wonderful place to relax

The sum total of Moya and Richard’s experience of animals, prior to moving to this 250 acre farm, was a hamster and a Springer Spaniel. But they fell in love with this beautiful spot and in particular with the tumbling down 17th Barn Sussex Barn that stood in its grounds.

They had been looking to create a special place where they could indulge their passion for hospitality and Roundhurst had it all and more. The warmth of the hospitality and the patient restoration project came easily but taking on the farm was a steep learning curve.

Charles Hastain: December 2015

Me and my partner visited here for our anniversary and it was superb. The barn and the rooms are top notch and the service was so friendly. We also had the dinner both nights we stayed and it was delicious as was the breakfast. I cannot fault our stay and can't wait to go again!
