INDUSTRIAL-LUXE STYLE

A converted Victorian shop and town house, Swain House has been restored in an ‘industrial-luxe’ style with a skimming stone wash throughout and murals from the National Gallery creating bold colour on bedroom suite walls.  It is a glamorous and friendly B&B find in the heart of Watchet, a Somerset harbor town on a beautiful stretch of coast.

The Location

Set against the Quantock Hills, Watchet is close to the popular seaside town of Minehead, gateway to Exmoor and Dunster, home of the National Trust’s stunning Dunster Castle.  It is also on Coleridge Way – the poet’s famous poem was inspired by Watchet’s picturesque harbor!

Swain House is easily accessible from London and main transport lines.  The M5 is the nearest motorway, turn off at junction 23 for Bridgewater and then follow signs towards Minehead.  Nearest main line station is Taunton 17 miles away.  Taunton to Paddington 1 hour 45 mins.  Local station (steam train!) is from Bishops Lydeard (about 5 miles from Taunton) to Minehead.

  • the little-known world of Watchet – English poet Samuel Talyor Coleridge discovered this lovely place in 1798 when the beautiful harbour marina inspired him to pen The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.  Watchet really feels a million miles away, and it benefits for being off the tourist trail and has long been a place where artists and writers headed for
  • the perfect combination of seaside energy (rise to the challenge of holiday an adrenalin), rural loveliness, coastal beauty and of course the eclectic charm of the B&B itself
  • the extravagant colours of the murals against the skimming stone around which Swain House is styled, makes for an indulgent surroundings that help you drop your shoulders and sink in for a fabulously good night’s sleep
  • the ensuite bathrooms with more than enough space and time to chill out and hang out in baths and bathrobes to get through a good book
  • four expansive guest suites designed for indulgent getaways.  Each room, with crisp white linen contrasting with the skimming stone decor, has a kingsize bed and high spec bathroom suite with a freestanding roll top slipper bath, walk-in shower, luxury bathrobes (of course) and REN toiletries to soak up
  • flat screen TVs, DVD players and contemporary coffee and tea making facilities are subtly placed in each room – with plenty of extras from champagne to truffles – that can be arranged before arrival
  • there is a cosy sitting room and a ‘shop window’ from which you can enjoy the view while tucking into a delicious and unusual (try Somerset rarebit soldiers with your boiled eggs…), homemade breakfast choices – all locally sourced and thoroughly delicious
  • but don’t lounge too long in bed (you don’t have to have breakfast until 10am…), because there are plenty of activities if you are up for a challenge
  • if you just fancy admiring the coastline and scouting for a few fossils, there are plenty of ways to relax with beaches to stroll on, the local steam railways to ride on and good ale to sup at the local award-winning pub, The Star Inn

Jason and Annie Robinson, ex Disney creatives got married in the area and abandoned London to pursue a dream of setting up a luxury boutique B&B.  They have restored this old townhouse and shop in the style of B&B that they would love to stay in – stepping away from the stress of corporate living but reflecting the industrial-luxe style that this life inspired.
