Welsh Cottage escape
Step into a picture-postcard rural idyll at this charming 16th-century stone holiday cottage with garden, sleeping up to five. With spectacular views of the rolling hills, countryside to explore and a great village pub just a stroll away, it’s the perfect escape!
The Location
In the quiet, tiny village of Old Radnor in Powys, Mid-Wales, the whitewashed stone cottage is in a private spot, perched on a hill overlooking the beautiful Radnor hills. With the village church opposite and THE HARP INN, a perfect country pub, next door, this property is beautifully placed. Bring your hiking boots because there are many walks you can do right from the front door to enjoy the lush landscape and look out for buzzards or even, if you’re lucky, a red kite.
There are various pretty towns close to the property too. Presteigne, just six miles away, has a variety of shops and foodie haunts, including a fishmonger and deli. There’s an award-winning museum (The Judge’s Lodgings) and The Presteigne Festival of Arts and Music in July. Hay-on-Wye, famous for its many bookshops and the Hay Festival at the end of May, is only ten miles away across wild rolling moorland – it is also worth visiting for quirky clothes and interiors shops.
Slightly further away is LUDLOW, brimming with gorgeous independent shops, food shops and eateries – there are lots of high quality independent cafes and food shops near Harp Cottage and your stomach will be as well feasted as your eyes! The Michelin-starred STAG INN AT TITLEY, just 7 miles away, is well worth a visit, as is ST JOHN’S PLACE IN HAY-ON-WYE, the perfect place for a great meal after a day in the bookshops. Just remember to book ahead! Old Radnor is approximately a 3hr 30 min drive from London.
- The cottage has a calm and tranquil atmosphere
- It is easy to abandon the car on arrival and walk from the Cottage to the pub, if you don’t fancy cooking. The Harp Inn is a wonderful country pub – the local beer, food and views are top notch!
- We loved the sunny sheltered terrace with doors directly from the kitchen and living space; perfect for alfresco dining
- Coming home to two wood-burning stoves is lovely and cozy and it feels like a genuine rural escape!
- The magical landscape, half Welsh/half English, dotted with standing stones and ancient burial mounds, makes a stunning view from the cottage windows
- The cottage garden is a haven for birdlife. Expect robins, sparrows, wrens, blackbirds, blue tits and great tits in the garden, and buzzards, tawny owls and ravens in the woodland above the house. You might be lucky – red kites fly over the Cottage occasionally. They are common locally and watching them feed in huge numbers at Gigrin Farm near Rhayader is unforgettable

Owner Albert bought the 16th century stone cottage as a refreshing contrast to the buildings he’s used to working with as the co-founder of themodernhouse.com . It also serves as a great place to put this collection of 20th century art and furniture. He enjoys exploring the wonderful area (particularly the local food, drink and cycling and walking routes with his dog) and sharing his finds in the welcome book at Little Harp Cottage.

A stunningly situated cottage. The village of Old Radnor has amazing panoramic views and an excellent pub with a beautiful old flag stone floor. The cottage was idyllic with its garden with a large dining table and chairs. We rarely went further than the garden and the pub, but a trip into Hay on Wye and Ludlow were lovely.
