Top tips when you visit Skye
Skye is one of the most visited of Scottish islands and for good reason! It’s a beautiful island with a rugged coast and beautifully wild and rugged open spaces inland. Anne from Osdale Cottages share her five top tips when you visit her stunning cottages on this lovely, lovely island.
Macleod’s Tables
Osdale sits in the shadow of Macleod’s Table North (Healabhal Mhor) and it’s just calling to be climbed! The path to Healabhal Mhor starts just outside Osdale’s gate. It’s a steep, strenuous walk but with such stunning views from the top it’s well worth the effort. But if you are short on time or energy, take the path to Osdale burn – it takes about 20 minutes to reach and you’ll feel like you are in the middle of nowhere.
Dine at one of Skye’s finest restaurants
Skye is a food lover’s dream and Osdale is well-located for some of Skye’s best restaurants. Our favourite is Edinbane Lodge. This award-winning restaurant takes great pride in its locally sourced seafood, meats and croft-grown produce and is the perfect holiday treat.
Visit SkyeSkyns
A trip to Skye isn’t complete without visiting SkyeSkyns. Sheep are a big feature of Skye life. You’ll find them wondering along the single-track roads and grazing in the fields around Osdale. You’ll also find sheepskins in our cottages -they are wonderful to snuggle into on a chair or rest your feet on as you step out of bed. At Skyesyns you can learn exactly how the sheepskins are produced, and they have a great shop so you can take home a little piece of Skye. In the summer months they also have a Tea Yurt serving refreshments and great cake.
Neist Point and Lighthouse
This is one of Skye’s iconic locations and is popular for good reason. It’s one of the best places on the island to spot whales, dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks and if none of those turn up there are plenty of sea birds! The sunsets are also stunning but it’s very popular in the summer months so be prepared to share the experience with others. If you are seeking solitude, then timing is everything – visit out of season or early in the mornings.
Live music
Head over to The Old Inn at Carbost or Edinbane Inn for live music sessions that fill the air with traditional tunes. There’s something magical about sitting in a cosy pub, sipping a drink, and listening to local musicians play – an evening you won’t want to miss, and one you won’t forget.
