Meet the owners: Fistral Loft
As part of a new series in which we introduce you to the owners of some of our properties, we’re off to Cornwall to meet Gary and Richard of Fistral Loft. Stunning beaches, fresh seafood and lovely countryside is just the start.
The writer Virginia Woolf in 1909 speaking of Cornwall, the county that inspired so much of her work, said: ‘I have been walking along the sands and sitting in the sun. I am so drugged on fresh air that I cannot write. As for the beauty of this place, it surpasses every other season.’ Any visitor to Fistral Loft, the ultimate coastal retreat, will too become incurably romantic about the place as the legendary author was.
Created from part of an old hotel in Pentire, just outside of Newquay, Fistral Loft is beautifully designed, but also has some stunning coastal views – perfect for surfer watching. With exhilarating water sports available and access to some of the country’s most beautiful countryside and top seafood restaurants, owners Gary and Richard tell us what makes this beautiful apartment a perfect addition to your holiday wish list.
FA: Were you always country boys or did you have to make a leap from city life?
We’ve managed to combine a city and country life pretty successfully. We’re based in Brighton where we run a graphic design studio and a hairdressing salon (Mooch) respectively, but when we can we escape to Fistral Loft and rent it out when we’re not there.
FA: How did you end up running your business?
We have twin passions; the beach and interiors, so when the chance to buy and renovate the loft came up it was perfect for us. We designed and renovated everything ourselves and have been renting it out since summer 2017.
FA: Tell us a bit about the country pursuits that are on offer either through you or through providers in the immediate area that you work with.
Fistral Loft is located frontline facing Fistral beach and it’s a great base for lots of outdoor activities. You can book surf schools from the beach or go coasteering from the headland with fantastic guides. This can include jet ski coasteering if you like or stand up paddle boarding along the River Gannel behind us. The golf course is also at the back of the beach too.
FA: What’s your favourite walk?
From the headland we’re located on you can walk around the coast path, passing over the Gannel at low tide onto Crantock beach or using the ferry in summer after picking up delicious fresh crab sandwiches from the shack en route. If you keep walking there are some incredible gems to be discovered, especially at the next bay – Polly Joke, only accessible by foot – where you will nearly always look down at the local seal colony.
FA: Do you have a favourite pub or restaurant nearby?
Our absolute favourite places to eat are right on the beach at Fistral – just a few minutes’ walk away! Amazing dining at The Fish House (award-winning and visited by many a celebrity chef) or for more relaxed dining The Stable located above it with an incredible pizza and pie menu and over 200 types of cider for you to try.
FA: If you’re looking for a bit of culture where do you head to?
If you’re looking for a bit of culture and a truly unique experience then a 20-minute drive to the south coast takes you to the Eden Project with its bio-domes and tropical gardens. If you’ve never been it’s an absolute must. It’s one of the best things to have happened in Cornwall – ever!
FA: What’s the best thing about running your business?
Honestly, it’s about sharing our home with other people who love it as much as we do – evident through the amount of rebookings we’ve already had. It’s a joy to do.
