The Black Shed

Isle of Skye, Scotland

Wild views, cool greys

The contemporary cool of this architect designed ‘shed’ contrasts with its wild, windswept location at the foot of a rugged mountain on the Isle of Skye. Warm grey cosy sofas, slick stainless steel kitchen and stunning views make this a very comfortable shed indeed.

Location

Designed by award-winning architects Rural Design, the Black Shed stands proudly against the dramatic landscape of Skye on the Duirinish peninsular. It sits at the foot of the magnificent Macleods Table (surely worth a climb...) and close to Loch Dunvegan which the property overlooks.

From the bridge to Skye at Kyle of Lochalsh, it is an easy drive along the A87 to Dunvegan and the township of Skinidin where you can spot the Black Shed at the foot of the Macleod Tables. And from there you can simply step out of the door and explore. Kick off with wild walking and breath-taking views and you are sure to find space, peace and time to think.

About The Owners

The Black Shed is owned and run by Blair who has lived on the Croft with her son for 9 years. With recent husband Tim, Blair also works from home running their design business whilst tending to the demands of a growing croft.

  • The stylish simplicity – it is quite simply a beautiful shed in a beautiful spot.
  • The comfort and style, big views and juxtaposition of this stark angular building against the wild, sloping landscape, which from empty beaches to snowy mountain tops provide endless places to explore and enjoy.
  • That the Sunday Times has included it in its 50 coolest cottages and that The Guardian raves about Rural Design, the architects behind the project – as well as putting in a good word for the Black Shed.
  • The Isle of Skye!  There is absolutely no doubting why The National Geographic Magazine voted this the 4th best island in the world.  The romantically remote landscape takes your breath away.
  • Portree has all the amenities you might expect of small regional town but if it is food on a world stage you are after this can be found at The Three Chimneys

  • Built on the site of an old agricultural building close to the nearby Croft house, the Black Shed is an independent and very individual self-catering space. The Croft itself supplies seasonal produce to visitors when available and Blair and Tim are happy to do whatever is needed (if anything...) to ensure your stay in this wonderfully remote location is relaxing and comfortable.
  • The Shed is made for two, with one double bedroom, including a Kingsize bed with feather filled duvet and pillows, organic cotton sheets and blankets from local weavers, Skye Weavers - to keep you cosy. Deep windows connect you to the views out over Loch Dunvegan and beyond. There is a study area as part of the lounge that can also be used as an extra bedroom when divided by floor to ceiling Harris Tweed curtains. A large walk-in shower with stainless steel fittings in the bathroom gives you somewhere stylish to clean up after a bracing day out.
  • The lounge area with a modern wood burner, plenty of light and cosy seating makes a perfect space in which to relax and appreciate the stunning location and the spectacular changes in weather. The fully equipped kitchen is open plan to the living area and can also be divided off by drawing the curtains.
  • The house is equipped with most of the usual appliances such as washing machine with a Shelias maid overhead drying rack. There is a deliberate lack of dishwasher, microwave and terrestrial TV - but there is free wifi, use of the owners landline telephone if mobiles don’t connect, Apple TV and a DVD player with a large selection of films to watch.
  • The interior walls are clad in timber, insulated with sheep's wool and the polished concrete under heated flooring ensure that your stay is warm and cosy all year round.
  • The Black Shed is on a working croft with a variety of livestock including hens, ducks, Hebridean sheep, Goose, dog and cat. (For this reason the owners do not allow pets to stay.)
