Location

Situated in the village of Stratton, near Bude, in the north of Cornwall, the accommodation is perfectly placed for a good exploration of Cornwall and Devon. The village of Stratton is as pretty as can be and only 1.5miles away, or a 5-minute drive away from the coast and Bude, a beautiful town offering fantastic opportunities for surfing. Various surf schools in the area offer lessons for surfers from beginners to the more experienced. Other great beaches include Crooklets Beach and Summerleaze Beach (where you'll find the stunning part natural, part man-made Bude Sea Pool) just under 2 miles away and Widemouth Bay, which is less than 5 miles.

If you're not partial to the whole wetsuit and surfboard scene, don't despair, because there's so much more to do in the area than surf. Fishing trips, cycling through awesome scenery, horse-riding, golfing, sampling local delights in cafes, walking the rugged coastal paths or checking out local attractions such as the Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan or Lundy Island and Marine Nature Reserve, are all great options. Or, since Bude is one of the sunniest places in Cornwall, you might just want to flop onto one of the beaches and read a novel or let the sun warm your body and soul.

For the evening if you want to take a break from exploring and can tear yourself away from the log fire at the guesthouse, there's a cinema near Bude called Rebel and plenty of great eateries ranging from seafood restaurants and surf-style diners to traditional pub food. Just make sure you leave space for the award-winning breakfast served up at the guesthouse the following morning! To get there; the nearest stations to Bude are Exeter St David's, Bodmin Parkway and Barnstaple, which are about 45 minutes away by taxi.

About The Owners

Jan Elliott and Liz Chadd bought the property in July 2010, when it was neglected and in severe need of some TLC. Jan, who used to be a teacher and Liz, who worked in sustainable development, have lovingly renovated and refurbished the building and gardens, retaining the old world charm of the house, while transforming it into a beautiful, comfortable place to stay. Jan is a qualified holistic therapist and offers spa treatments on site. Liz cooks the award-winning breakfasts and the couple specialise in home-baked breads, preserves and cakes.

  • How can we not begin with the breakfasts? The smell of fresh home-baked bread wafting into your dreams made will make you want to leap out of bread and down to the breakfast table.
  • The location. You're in a secluded, relaxing spot, but so close to everything the area has to offer.
  • The views from the top of the garden. Watching the sun set is just lovely.
  • The honesty bar is a great idea. Having a drink in the early evening out in the garden was a perfect way to wind up the day.
  • The massage! Wrap up in the dressing gowns provided and treat yourself to spa treatments in-house and leave feeling invigorated and relaxed.
  • The welcome of homemade cake and tea is a lovely touch.
  • The cleanliness of the guesthouse is worth noting. Exceptionally clean and fresh at all times.
  • The owners were charm personified. Never intrusive, but on hand if required, this couple are ideal hosts.
  • The stylish renovation has been thoughtful and sympathetic - it all looks and feels right.

  • The guesthouse has five en-suite spacious bedrooms. Premium rooms have a superking-size bed, but can be twins if required.
  • There's a spacious, comfy lounge with seasonal open log fire where you can relax with books, newspapers, maps and games.
  • A licensed bar, which operates on an 'honesty' basis.
  • Award-winning home-cooked breakfasts, using local produce, including homemade bread and preserves.
  • On-site spa treatment room including Swedish massage, Indian head massage, aromatherapy and reflexology.
  • Private car park on site with ample room for all guests.
  • Secluded terraced, walled gardens with various areas to relax and listen to birdsong.
  • Generous hospitality trays in each of the rooms with teas, coffee and chocolate.
  • Flat screen digital TV, free WiFi, iPod docks, DVD, CD players and a DVD library.
  • 100% Egyptian cotton bed linen and luxury bathroom toiletries

Deb Gibbs : March 2017
We would thoroughly recommend Stratton Gardens for a short or longer stay.  The warm welcome, delightful decor, lovely location and brilliant breakfasts all added up to the enjoyable and relaxing time that we needed.

Helen Lewis : July 2014
A perfect get away. Jan and Liz have created a warm and friendly home from home for travelers. From the welcome cold drink and flapjack (probably the best in the SW) to the comfortable rooms and fabulous breakfast. I, too, had an aromatherapy massage for the first time and that just helped make an already wonderfully relaxing stay even better. We could not fault our stay, and their knowledge of the best places for cream tea was also spot on.

Louise : April 2014
Just before Easter we made our third visit to Stratton Gardens. We love the place, the welcome, the lovely bedroom with basket of DVDs, the honesty bar and the breakfast. This visit I had a massage for the first time and had a lovely relaxing experience. Jan and Liz are friendly and very helpful and we feel utterly comfortable there. We would strongly recommend this to anyone visiting Cornwall and we certainly plan to keep returning. A brilliant place.
