The Location

The Saccharum Resort & Spa is on the southern coast of Madeira in Calheta. Close to the resort is the town’s harbour (a five minute walk) dotted with quaint restaurants and bars. The sandy beach of Praia da Calheta is a short walk away, although the hotel’s gorgeous infinity pool (there are three outdoor pools in total) with mountain and ocean views is at your doorstep.

Madeira Airport is a 47 minute drive, and private transfers can be arranged. The island’s capital of Funchal – with its winding laneways and regular markets – is a 30 minute drive from the hotel, and a daily shuttle bus is available. Exploring the island by car is easy and the chance to visit beautiful towns and natural attractions might (might) be enough to drag you away from those pools. CHECK THIS OUT FOR SOME INSPIRATION.

You are guaranteed a lovely view whether you choose a full or side ocean view room. All feature private balconies with either Atlantic Ocean or mountain or inland vistas
The sprawling and indulgent spa is a big draw. Its top level amenities include sauna, turkish baths, ice fountain, sensorial showers, halo therapy room, heated indoor pool, jacuzzi, and relaxation room. Whilst not inexpensive it is pure class
Day excursions are available, including jeep safaris to different regions of Madeira, dolphins and whale watching, and mountain peaks
The public beach at the base of the resort has allocated patio space for the exclusive use of hotel guests
The food! Excellent breakfasts and a choice of three restaurants – the seafood is marvellous
The rooftop bar offers sensational ocean views and most evenings there is live music. Perfect for sundowner martinis and sugar cane Rum temptations

Fitness centre with gym, four different pools – including a roof top infinity pool with amazing views – spa and wellness centre. Oh and a squash court if you are feeling the need to burn off those martinis
Marble bathrooms with oversized walk-in showers and full bathroom amenities
Consider upgrading to the premium service which provides an “all access experience” – especially good if you love the spa as it includes unlimited spa time

This is one of your star plus finds! Whilst not as small or intimate as some Further Afield properties, the Savoy Sacchrum is truly amazing – one thing I especially loved was the architect’s use of the artefacts from the old sugar mill and the textures and sculptures were a delight. The piped music, less so...

I ended up in sea view room which was vast and with amazing views from balcony and a truly luxurious bed. Whilst the bathroom had no bath, there is a spa where you can bath if you want to soak after a long day hiking. Breakfast in the room was really interesting; bread, rolls, meats, cheeses and fruit. Great.

Although the buffet restaurant wasn’t my thing, the main restaurant was truly 4 star as was the little cafe on the sea in front of hotel. I used and enjoyed the spa and found the staff to be consistently helpful and professional. I’m planning my return.
