LA Maison D'Ulysse

Languedoc-Roussillon, SW France

Escape the bustle of modern life at this gay-friendly, luxuriously renovated, 17th century farmhouse and now luxury boutique hotel/guesthouse. Once the home of poet and archeologist Ulysse Dumas, a heady mix of exceptional rooms, vineyard views, plentiful gardens and fine food awaits you.

This short film by French Channel 5 gives a taster (in French) Maison D'Ulysse.

Elegantly situated in a secluded spot in the village of Baron, (near Uzes and Pont du Gard) in the Gard (Languedoc-Roussillon region), in the south of France, this welcoming guesthouse feels like it's in the middle of nowhere, yet is driving distance away from numerous French destinations and attractions. Overlooked by the ruins of the Chateau de l'Arque and with views of vineyards and the green valley beyond, the immediate area offers peace, tranquility and space to breathe.

The region, as a whole, is steeped in history and culture - the Roman Arena in Nimes, the Hill of Hermitage and Pont du Gard are on the doorstep as are many more world famous sights. Close by, the historical town of Uzes, where you could check out the stunning  'window tower' (La tour fenestrelle) is only 11km from Baron, as is the undiscovered gem of Vezenobres set in fig and olive hills, where you'll find architecture and winding backstreets, dating from the 14th century. Then there is Nimes, only 24km away, where visiting the 2000 year-old amphitheatre among many other awe-inspiring sights is a must.

If you're more into people watching or indulging in the region's exquisite food and wine, there are cafes, markets, vineyards and restaurants aplenty - in Uzes, there's an amazing food market twice a week where you can stuff your shopping basket and your belly. For those who like to leap around a bit more, horse-riding, paragliding, sky-diving and hot-air ballooning are available - the property's owners, Guy and Gauthier will happily advise.

To reach La Maison d'Ulysse, you can fly in to Nimes airport, (approx 40 mins away), Montpellier International Airport (approx 60 mins away) or Marseille International Airport (approx 90 mins away).

About The Owners

Guy and Gauthier embody all that is French and stylish. They know this part of the world intimately and can help you find the best of whatever you are looking for. Twice a week in high season (once the rest of the year) Gauthier prepares an intimate table d'hotes (3 course meal) where guests get to experience the delights of his cooking, with many ingredients grown and harvested from their gardens, local wines and a superb atmosphere. Don’t miss it!

  • The beautiful and magical setting. Immaculate grounds with stunning plants, homegrown vegetables and gorgeous sunflower fields in the distance.
  • Stunning swimming pool lined with lavender plants and designer chairs. Plenty of sun loungers to relax the day away.
  • The enchanting courtyard, where a delightful breakfast is served. The homemade jams and the local cheeses are a highlight.
  • Guy and Gauthier are absolutely wonderful hosts who care about their guests and their charming property. They will do everything to welcome you to their home and to ensure you have the most enjoyable stay possible. They are generous with their local knowledge and will do their utmost to offer their advice on where to go, what to see and where to eat.
  • Stunning bedrooms, each with their own unique character and tasteful design.
  • The table d'hote evenings hosted by Guy and Gauthier are simply divine. In a romantic candlelit courtyard setting we devoured the three course meal prepared with home-grown produce.
  • Tasting wines in local vineyards including Lirac and Tavel - a wonderful way to spend the day!

  • There are seven luxury rooms available, including four spectacular suites plus the newly opened, Apartment Petit Prince - a beautiful self-contained apartment, perfect for romantic breaks.
  • The rooms, suites and apartment all have high-end bathrooms with various luxury facilities. The Fleur Dumas Suite, with it's 1930s vibe, has a glorious bathtub for long, steamy baths.
  • The swimming pool, 15m long, is the centre of a relaxation area where you can sunbathe, read in the shade of Pine trees or take a dip in the heated pool. (27°c)
  • You can relax further in the genuine Turkish bath, or opt for a massage in our relaxing vaulted lounge (remember to book!). Bathrobe, towels and slippers are all at your disposal.
  • The 'table d’hôte' is prepared by the talented chef/owner Gauthier, who cooks with local produce, much of it from his own organic vegetable garden in the grounds of the property.  (Available in July and August on Friday and Monday evenings and Saturdays the rest of the year)
  • With the price of the room comes an ‘express breakfast’ and with a small supplement of 8 Euros (if reserved in advance or 12 Euros on site) a gourmet breakfast served in the courtyard, including local breads, pastries, cheeses, meats and fruit will set you up perfectly for a the day.
  • Outside, apart from the pool, are the gardens, where garden tables and benches are nestled in flowers and shrubs, for the ultimate thinking spot.
